Kitchener, Ontario - The City of Kitchener is proud to announce a record $287,600 in total funding for its resident-led LoveMyHood Matching Grant program in 2025, thanks in part to a generous $87,600 grant from Waterloo Region Community Foundation (WRCF).
The additional funding, provided through The Lyle S. Hallman Fund held at WRCF, is earmarked for recreation-focused capital expenses that will benefit children and youth up to 13 years of age, helping to create safe, engaging and enriching environments for young residents to learn, grow and play.
For 2025, it will be added to the $200,000 annual grant funding typically distributed by the Neighborhood Development Office for the LoveMyHood grant.
“On behalf of our community, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Waterloo Region Community Foundation, and The Lyle S. Hallman Fund, for the generous grant towards our capital projects aimed at enhancing recreation for our children,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. “This investment is about more than physical infrastructure – it’s a commitment to the well-being of our community and the future of our children as we continue to bring neighbourhood projects to life.”
Since its inception, hundreds of projects have already been brought to life through the LoveMyHood program. From community gardens, playground upgrades and greening efforts, to street parties, and placemaking efforts - the projects have supported resident-led ideas that foster connected, vibrant neighbourhoods.
“These past few years, we’ve seen not only an increase in the number of applications but also a growing demand for larger neighbourhood capital projects,” said Josh Joseph, Manager of Neighbourhood Development Office. “From basketball courts and playground structures to a disc golf course, and more, residents are bringing forward creative ideas that enhance our shared spaces.”
The grant from WRCF represents a shared vision for building strong, inclusive communities through grassroots initiatives.
“The initiatives that the City of Kitchener supports - including the LoveMyHood program, are advancing social infrastructure in our community. WRCF is pleased to be able to assist in growing the opportunities and impact,” said Eric Avner, President & CEO, Waterloo Region Community Foundation. “Together, we are helping create meaningful interactions in neighbourhoods and between neighbours.”
The WRCF funded projects are to be completed by December 31, 2026.
Residents with creative ideas to enhance their neighbourhoods are encouraged to apply for the LoveMyHood matching grant. The next review deadlines are Thursday, June 12, 2025, and Thursday, November 13, 2025.
